2011-12 SHAS Honorees
Adam & Amy Goldman: Ever since their arrival in Sharon 11 years ago, Adam and
Amy have committed themselves to our community. They began volunteering with
the joint task of chairing the SHAS ad journal for two years, and then branched
out into more individual roles. Adam has been a long-term member of the SHAS finance
committee, and served as Treasurer on the board for 5 years. In this role, Adam
saw the school through major financial ups and downs, working tirelessly to
keep us on steady financial footing. Not only did he keep an astute eye on
numbers, throughout his tenure Adam also had thoughtful insights into what we
as a school should be doing and how to make us a better school. He
continues his involvement as a current member of the board of trustees. Amy is
a long-time parent volunteer, best known for chairing and organizing the SHAS
annual celebration for the past 8 years. Every one of these events has been well-run
and elegant, attributed to Amy's party-planning talents, unmatched creativity
and contagious enthusiasm. Adam and Amy continually search for ways to engage
our children and teens in Yiddishkeit. They think about the big picture and
find a way to turn that into action. For them, it's all about doing
what's best for our kids and our community.
R. William Striar Service Awardee
Dan Shimshak: Although he was never a school parent (or grandparent),
Dan generously invested his time and wisdom in governing our school out of a
pure desire to strengthen SHAS in the Sharon community and ensuring its
long-term growth. While serving for 5 years on the board, first as a director
and then as a trustee, Dan helped make sure that people were thinking
strategically in both present and future decision-making. His quick wit
and sense of humor always contribute much-needed comic relief, especially when
he supervised the installation of the building's new septic system. Dan is an inspiring
example of community leadership and investment.
Teacher Recognition Award
Ellen Kischel (Mrs. Kischel): Throughout her 6 six years at SHAS so far, Ellen has organized
creative programming that brings curricula to life. Frontier day and science
fair are two such examples. Perhaps most important, Ellen teaches kids how to
learn and gives them the tools to become organized students. Ellen is also a valuable
mentor
to colleagues, especially in math and science.
She cares deeply about all of her students, and truly loves what she does.
We also offer special recognition of this year's 6th Grade graduating class.
